  1. Kelly, I am terribly sorry that you were going through all of this, and yet you never let your guard down at the wonderful service you provided to all of us when we attended the wonderful Tea Rooms. You are truly a professional at your work and have empathy for your fellow customer.

I wish you and your family all the very best and may you find justice, in what seems to be a greedy and unreasonable landlord.

    Regards J.T. McLaughlin

  2. Thank you for your story, this now all makes so much sense as to what I experienced in November 2021. When we visited then, the customers seem invisible. I waited at the front door and was finally approached by a staff member who had walked past me earlier. After seated and waiting for my wife, I ordered a coffee. The arrival of my wife generated no interest by the staff as time passed and despite attempts to make eye contact with the waitress I needed to raise my voice to get her interest. The sandwiches ordered were just ok. We will not return.

I can safely say that I will now be returning to the new relocated site – of the Original Hopetoun Tea Rooms.

  3. Dear Kelly
Oh my goodness!!! This whole thing must have been so traumatic for you. So sorry you have had to go through this. I hope you get some ‘legal justice’. We have missed it and visiting Hopetoun Tea Rooms was one of the highlights of our trips for many years.

The new tea room looks lovely and we will certainly visit when we have an opportunity to visit Melbourne again. I wish you every success in your ventures and knowing your work ethic and wonderful personality , I know the new store will be an outstanding succes.

All the very best. Yvonne & Leisa Jagiello (The Stamping Bug Gift Shop, Somerset, Tasmania. 🤗

  4. Reading the Herald Sun paper , where the reporter writes

“The tensions have also generated claims former Hopetoun Tea Rooms owners Kon and Kelly Koutoumanos are trying to sabotage the new cake shop that has gone into The Block Arcade by posting fake online reviews about it.”

What about the Block Arcade, who continue to deceive the people & the community, with the business name “Hopetoun Tea Rooms” still in place at the Block Arcade, isn’t this sabotaging the new owners that have bought the name and the goodwill?

I think the Block Arcade are being just a little bit blind to the situation that they have put themselves into?

  5. When I visited this establishment I didn’t realise that it wasn’t the old Hopetoun Tearooms which I had visited many times in the past in The Block. It’s now a new business, the Hopetoun Tearooms having moved out some time ago. Well, this new business is a real disappointment! The service was incredibly slow and the tea and food were below par.

I should have thought that something was up when there was no queue outside at lunchtime.

  6. I visited what I thought was the real deal for the first time as a treat during our staycation in the city this week and sadly didn’t have a great experience at all.
It was only when we were driving home that went to look online at reviews to see what other people thought that I realised it wasn’t even The Hopetoun Tea Rooms.
I was so disappointed to feel deceived by the window display and the big lettering underneath saying Hopetoun Tea Rooms. Can’t believe they can still use this signage. All the best with your new location that I will definitely have to visit at some stage.

  7. What an absolute shocking manner to treat an iconic business and establishment. The Block Arcade owners must have rocks in their heads to deal with an iconic business in this way. It did not deserve to remain at the Block Arcade shown by the way these supposed landlords treat their tenants.

I am sure the Hopetoun Tea Rooms will be much better off at their new location in Bourke street, and hopefully the imitation store in the Block Arcade will fail..

Thank you for telling your story and wish you all the best..

Love all the way from England

  8. Very interesting reading, I am sure that there are many other stories to tell from others who have come accross the same or similar landlords.

Keep well, as you made the Hopetoun Tea Rooms what it is today.

  9. Dear Kelly,

We always loved dining at Hopetoun Tea Rooms and am very sad that it is no longer in the Block Arcade.

As I live in Perth, I was unaware of the closing down of your business and all that has occurred, as per your website. While I do not wish to speculate or comment it looks like a battle on your hands.

Although a sad decision for you I am happy you have been able to relocate and start again. I am hoping you can deliver all the charm and wonder of the original premises but am assured your food and service will be of comparable standard.

When and if, we here in WA will ever get to travel freely between the rest of Australia, we will certainly come and dine in your new premises.

    Wishing you all the best.

    Carol Manus

  10. Thankyou for the very interesting story/truth! I will follow to keep up to date! We are looking forward to having our next high tea with you – as the new place. Keep your chin up, you are a wonderful company and provide a fabulous service to Melbourne. Brenda Hughes

  11. Hopetoun tearooms is my most favourite tearoom in the world.
I hope everything comes back to normal 😂😂

  12. Hi. As you probably already know. Many of us have posted information in support of your shocking treatment by the white collar bullies running the CBD to the ground. I am somewhat glad you have found the courage as I can only imagine the trauma this “fraud” has caused you & your family. I’m writing this to alert you after reading a propaganda article written by @johndagge in to today’s @theheraldsun .
I have addressed my personal concerns about the substandard journalism following your being ‘defrauded in broad day light’ – by referring John to posts containing evidence in the following accounts
    @the.tearooms1892
    and in particular @thetearooms1892_ .
I know not what to further say other than I hope you get justice soon and all the perpetrators who are trying to silence you, get taken away with handcuffs and jailed for eternity

  13. Thank you for sharing your story @thehopetountearooms1892 I know how hard it must be. You are very missed ❤️

  14. What a nightmare. As if it isn’t hard enough to run a business atm. I sincerely hope this is resolved soon. All the best, can’t wait to visit.

  15. That’s an interesting issue. From an historical viewpoint perhaps a plaque on the wall saying ‘Site of the Hopetoun Tearooms 1892 – 2020’ certainly does not seem ok they’ve left that signage – is it deemed part of the fabric of the Block Arcade?

  16. What mongrels. Thankyou for letting me know what is happening. My son bought two gift cards for my daughter and I, two Xmas ago so given I am in the country each time I come into the city I check the building and haven’t seen much progress so hopefully now they might be able to finish and open. Good luck.

  17. I’m so sad to hear this, You may not remember me but your kindness whenever I visited the tea rooms was wonderful. I had no idea the tea rooms have been sold and I wish you all the best for the future.
I just felt like I had to message you to pass on my gratitude for how special you made me feel over the years I was in Melbourne for medical reasons and would get respite at your shop.
All the best for any future endeavours lovely lady.

    Sincerely S. Wilson ❤️

  18. Since the sale of the Block Arcade the new owners have been responsible for high levels of vacancies and turnover of offices and retail stores. It seems that in order to keep the Arcade looking occupied they just provide month – to – month rent, as shown on the front of Elizabeth street shops and an empty basement since that wool place left. The block arcade is all show but no go.

Thank you for the updates, very interesting reading into what happens behind the scenes, with greedy and unethical landlords

  19. I’m interested to read the updates. Glad to see you have new premises. We will definitely visit you again when we come to Melbourne.
